Each firing holds a bit of mystery as there are no guarantees of what you will see when you first open the kiln, but every now and then when you lift the brick lid after the fires have gone down, you see a piece that makes you catch your breath and tingle with the desire to reach down and hold it in your hands.

For me, one of the things that captures the eye is the contrast between the raw clay finish of the outside compared to the high gloss, glassy finish inside. Just prior to firing, the otside was covered with an iron oxide wash, then buffed so it would fire smooth and soft to the touch.

The leaves and branches wind their way from the the underside, to cradel the bowl in their emrace.

Couldn't resist trying it out for size as the inside of the bowl makes a parfect canvas to showcase the colourful fruit.
